WHO and Dutch Government to host event to launch new safe abortion guidelines

Unsafe abortion causes nearly 47,000 maternal deaths every year, almost all of which take place in developing countries. In addition, some 5 million women suffer short term or lifelong disabilities due to complications resulting from unsafe abortion.

Evidence based guidance for policy makers and service providers is vital in ensuring women have the services they need to avoid death and disability.

Marie Stopes International welcomes WHO’s new and updated policy and technical guidelines on safe abortion. The new WHO guidance, Safe abortion: technical and policy guidance for health systems, will help policy makers and service providers take the practical actions needed to help protect women’s health.

The guidelines are being launched at a WHO and Dutch Government hosted event on Wednesday 23 May during the World Health Assembly, and to help mark the 40th anniversary of WHO’s Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP).
