Blessed are the family planning providers

It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that religion and family planning do not mix. Yet in one of the most religious areas of Senegal, the Marie Stopes International Senegal team has proven, not once but twice, that the reality can be very different.

Touba in central Senegal is the holy city of Mouridism, one of the most powerful religious communities in the country, and the burial place of its founder Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

It is also the site of the Magal de Touba, one of the biggest Muslim events in West Africa, when thousands of pilgrims flock to the city to celebrate the day that Sheikh Ahmadou returned from exile in Ghana.

The area in the Sahel region of West Africa also has a huge unmet need for contraception and is pivotal to meeting Senegal’s family planning...
